RESUMO

The hot-work steel AISI H13 is the most used to make molds in aluminum injection. Many studies have been made to increase its lifetime. One promising method is the duplex treatment, where the mold is submitted to a heat treatment, nitriding and coating deposition. The current work uses the titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN). The influence of the nitrated layer thickness (30?m, 60?m and 90?m) and the TiAlN coating thickness (3.5?m e 8?m) was compared. Samples were made with the combination of these two parameters, with some samples being prepared without the coating for comparison. It was used the nitriding gas method whit ammonia (NH3). The coating film was deposed by the PVD technique (Physical Vapor Deposition). The tests that were made: chemical composition, roughness, coefficient of friction, wear rate, microhardness, nanohardness, optical and electronic microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The X-ray results showed the presence of Fe, FeCr2O4, Fe2N e Fe4N in all samples. The EDS result showed that the stoichiometric composition of the coating was Ti0.7Al0.3N. The MEV images indicated that the coating had a good adhesion and was monolayer. The wear rate indicated that the samples with the TiAlN coating had a minor wear than the samples without coating.
