RESUMO

The airn of this epidemiological study is to analyze the occurrence of deaths ITomexternal causes among men aged 15-64, living in Campinas, southeast ofBrazil, in the period ITom June, 1999 to May, 2000, and relate this mortality with the occupational history of this population. External causes are an important cause of death in almost all countries and in Brazil they come second in the morta1ityranking, affecting specially the younger inhabitants and increasing in the more productive age groups. Since it is known that there is a relationship between work and the health-disease process, this phenomenon seems to be related to the deterioration of workplace conditions and changes in the labour market. Besides, a large part of the economically active population is not supported by the Brazilian Welfare System (INSS) and not all the work-related deaths are recognized as occupational accidents, so official statistics are not realistic. This study intends to contribute to investigate these hypotheses. The data were obtained ITomdeath certificates and occupational information was obtained by interviewing families and relatives, which characterized the occupation as a social indicator. The results show that has been an important impact of the recent changes in the generallabour conditions on the workers health profile. There is also a significant unreported number of occupational accidents, not recognized by the official Social Welfare System. These facts point out that an urgent change on the health surveillance system is necessary to reflect more properly the reality of daily work conditions for preventing and controlling those events
