RESUMO

This work describes the application of EBG, Electromagnetic Band-Gap, structures on antennas for mobile communication systems. This technology can be used in both 3G and 4G mobile communication systems; for base stations, pico ba..c;;e stations, and mobile terminaIs; on WLAN, Wi-Fi, Bleutooth, WiMAX (IEEE802.16a), and other technologies. EBG structures are designed, simulated, and analyzed on square and hexagonal cell configurations, with one or two levels, applied on planar antennas, such as, patch and PIFA, as well as, on a PIFA antenna array. It is shown that the use of these structures can improve the antenna performance, such a..c;; on the gain, the efficiency, and, mainly, on the bandwidth. As an innovation, it is presented the Local Ground Plane, which is a contiguous ground plane with a very small area, placed just below the radiator and it provides a great improvement on the antenna characteristics
