RESUMO

Aiming to arrive at a method which permits the deciphering of the writings of The apple in the darkness, this research focuses on studies for the building of a metaphoric discourse. Equivalence relationships among the plurality of suggested meanings, offered by the choice of words and the building of literary discourse support the development of the work. In Clarice Lispector language, the words are freed from the ordinary norms to be associated and to form unusual illustrations, loaded of singular qualities. This singularity is responsible for ruptures that provoke oddness and offer the possibility for the existence of a literary universe. The enigmatic text, which is lhe result of Lispector s novel writing style, generates important questions: What is this apple? Who is Martim? The analogy of the apple, seen as the fruit of wisdom, and of Martim, interpreted as the fruit of literary construction, is analyzed, showing the metaphoric work responsible for the relationships between fable and the plot. The elements which compose the narrative - character, time and space - are rearranged. Martim is not the classic hera but a character-text; time, apparently chronological, becomes irregular and space, constituted by Martim s pilgrimage to the mineral, green and animal kingdoms, becomes mythical
