RESUMO

With the objective of evaluating the nutritive value of millet silage (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.), an experiment was conducted in the dependencies of the Animal Science Department of the UFLA, utilizing the millet established on a Typical Distroferric Red Latosol, very clayey texture. The treatments consisted of three cultivars (BRS 1501, BN 1 and Usual) and three cutting ages, 70, 90 and 110 days for silage, sown in November/2003 and February/2004. The experimental design utilized was that of randomized blocks, constituting into a factorial with 3 x 3. The contents of DM, CP, BC (original material), pH, N-NH3 (% total N), NDF, and ADF. For the digestibility trial, 12 young ewes were utilized (millet sown in November), distributed into a completely randomized design, constituting into a 2 x 3 (2 cultivars x 3cutting ages). Significant effects in DM yield (10.7 t/ha and 3.8 t/ha) for the cultivar BN 1 in the rainy and dry seasons were observed. There was a significant effect in the original material for the ages as to the contents of DM, CP, NDF, ADF and BC, ranging from 21.40 to 35.41%; 6.96 to 9.86%; 65.17 to 75.83%; 39.75 to 45.69% and 6.0 to 7.9 meqHCL/100g of DM, respectively and for the cultivars as for the NDF content was between 68.49 to 71.74%. For the silages, there were significant differences among cutting ages for the contents of DM., CP, N-NH3 and pH, varying from 21.34 to 36.83%, 7.13 to 9.50%, 1.21 to 1.38% and 3.48 to 3.77, respectively. There were increased consumptions of the silages of BRS 1501 (70 days) and BN 1 (90 days) relative to metabolic weight. For the production of millet silage, the cultivar BN 1 planted in November and March can be harvested at 90 days of age, out yielding and overcoming in nutritive value the others. As regards the use of these silages protein supplementation is recommended.
