1. Palmar and plantar lichen planus: a case report and review of the literature
AbstractPalmoplantar lichen planus is an uncommon dermatosis. We present a case of 38-year-old Caucasian male with a history of pruritic, scaly lesions on the right plantar foot. Physical examination revealed whitish plaques and numerous spiny hyperkeratotic papules and focal scaling. A biopsy demonstrated orthohyperkeratosis and acanthosis of the epidermis.

2. Enhanced T cell activation in Plasmodium falciparum malaria-infected human immunodeficiency virus-1 patients from Mozambique
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection has an important impact on malaria. Plasmodium falciparum and HIV-1 co-infected patients (Pf/HIV) present with a high degree of anaemia, enhanced parasitaemia and decreased CD4+ T cell counts, which increase the risk of developing severe malaria. In addition, infection with either Pf or HIV-1 alone causes extens

3. Dengue-2 and yellow fever 17DD viruses infect human dendritic cells, resulting in an induction of activation markers, cytokines and chemokines and secretion of different TNF-α and IFN-α profiles
Flaviviruses cause severe acute febrile and haemorrhagic infections, including dengue and yellow fever and the pathogenesis of these infections is caused by an exacerbated immune response. Dendritic cells (DCs) are targets for dengue virus (DENV) and yellow fever virus (YF) replication and are the first cell population to interact with these viruses during a

5. Immunopathology of the duodenal mucosa of HIV-positive patients during combined antiretroviral therapy
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the duodenal mucosa of HIV-infected patients during antiretroviral therapy. This was an observational study conducted on HIV-positive patients and a control group. Group 1 comprised 22 HIV-negative individuals while 38 HIV-positive individuals were classified according to the CDC 1993 classification into gro

6. "Expressão das proteínas Fas e Bcl-2 em células mononucleares de crianças e adolescentes com lúpus eritematoso sistêmico" / Expression of Fas and Bcl-2 proteins on mononuclear cells from children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus
In order to verify the expression of Fas and Bcl-2 proteins on lymphocytes and their relationship with disease activity 38 patients with juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus and 25 healthy controls were studied. The measurements showed that percentages of lymphocytes T CD3+ and CD8+ and B lymphocytes positively stained for Fas antigen and mean fluores

7. Painel racionalizado de anticorpos monoclonais para leucemias agudas : seu valor diagnostico e prognostico
Acute leukemia is characterized by a c1onal proliferation of haematopoietic stem cell substituting the normal bone marrow. The recent WHO c1assification for acute leukemia separates entities by recurrent cytogenetic abnormalities and immunophenotypic features presenting prognostic impact. We have examined the distribution and impact on survival of the expres

8. Mycobacteria Exploit p38 Signaling To Affect CD1 Expression and Lipid Antigen Presentation by Human Dendritic Cells▿
Group I CD1 proteins are specialized antigen-presenting molecules that present both microbial and self lipid antigens to CD1-restricted α/β T lymphocytes. The production of high levels of gamma interferon and lysis of infected macrophages by lipid-specific T lymphocytes are believed to play pivotal roles mainly in the defense against mycobacterial infectio

9. Single-cell analysis of signal transduction in CD4 T cells stimulated by antigen in vivo
Flow cytometry was used to study signaling events in individual CD4 T cells after antigen recognition in the body. Phosphorylation of c-jun and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase was detected within minutes in all antigen-specific CD4 T cells in secondary lymphoid tissues after injection of peptide antigen into the bloodstream. The remarkable rapidity of t

10. CD19 and immunophenotype of bone marrow plasma cells in monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance.
AIMS--To determine whether a particular phenotype or antigen is preferentially related to monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance (MGUS). METHODS--Bone marrow specimens from 56 patients with MGUS were stained immunocytochemically (ABC peroxidase) for CD38, CD56, CD9, CD10, CD19, CD20, CD22, and MB2. Specimens from patients recently diagnosed wit

11. Plasmacytoid differentiation of Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B cells in vivo is associated with reduced expression of viral latent genes.
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders that arise in immunosuppressed individuals are considered to resemble EBV-transformed in vitro lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) with a mature activated B-cell phenotype. In this study of human lymphoproliferative disorders in the severe combined immunodeficiency mouse model, however

12. Expression of CD3-associated antigen-binding receptors on suppressor T cells.
Three suppressor T (Ts)-cell hybridomas specific for 4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl acetyl (NP) hapten were selected for surface expression of cluster determinant 3 (CD3) by using antibody (anti-CD3) or antigen (NP-bovine serum albumin) panning procedures followed by cloning at limiting dilution. The CD3-selected Ts hybridomas showed a 1-2 logarithmic enrichment in
