1. Helminthic infection in three native rodent species from a semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem
As comun

2. Desempenho produtivo e qualidade da carne de ovinos terminados em pastagem irrigada no semiÃrido nordestino / Productive performance and meat quality of sheep finished in irrigated pasture in the northeastern semi arid
The aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance and meat quality of animals of Santa InÃs (SI), Somalis Brasileira (SO) and Morada Nova (MN) breeds and  Dorper x  Morada Nova crossbreds (F1) finished in irrigated cultivated pasture. Breeding season was done simultaneously for SI, SO and MN breeds and half of the Morada Nova females was

3. Enteroparasitosis prevalence and parasitism influence in clinical outcomes of tuberculosis patients with or without HIV co-infection in a reference hospital in Rio de Janeiro (2000-2006)
Tuberculosis and intestinal parasites affect primarily low social and economic level populations, living clustered in precarious habitational settings. One of the interesting aspects of this interaction is the parasitism influence in cellular response to tuberculosis. In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of enteroparasitosis in tuberculosis pati

4. MODULAÇÃO DA RESPOSTA IMUNOLÓGICA NO PULMÃO DE CAMUNDONGOS CO-INFECTADOS COM Mycobacterium bovis e Strongyloides venezuelensis

Investigation beetween dust mites, atopy allergy and intestinal helminthic infections.
The role of dust mites in the determination of the clinical form of allergy has not been well established. Many records in the literature show negative association between helminth infections and allergy, however, these data are still controversial. In this study we investigated the role of B. tropicalis and D. pteronyssinus as agents of atopy and allergy an

6. Schistosoma mansoni infection modulates the immune response against allergic and auto-immune diseases
Chronic Schistosoma mansoni infection leads to a type 2-immune response with increased production of interleukin (IL-10). Evidence indicates chronic exposure to S. mansoni down regulates the type 1 immune response and prevents the onset of Th1-mediated diseases such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes mellitus and Cronh's disease. Furthermore, our own studies ha

7. Aspects of the Maintenance of the Life Cycle of Fasciola hepatica in Lymnaea columella in Minas Gerais, Brazil
Fascioliasis is a parasitic disease of domestic ruminants that occurs worldwide. The lymnaeid intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica include Lymnaea columella, which is widely distributed in Brazil. A colony of L. columella from Belo Horizonte, MG, was reared in our laboratory to be used in studies of the F. hepatica life cycle, the intermediate host-parasi

8. Decreased Susceptibility to Listeria monocytogenes in Mice After Infection with Trichinella spiralis
Mice challenged intravenously with Listeria monocytogenes at 7 or 21 days after Trichinella spiralis infection demonstrated a higher mean lethal dose and longer survival time than normal mice. This effect of helminthic infection was abrogated after 49 days.

9. Increase of malaria attacks among children presenting concomitant infection by Schistosoma mansoni in Senegal
Helminthic infections concomitant with malaria are common in inter-tropical areas. A recent study showed that mice co-infected with Schistosoma mansoni and Plasmodium chabaudi develop higher P. chabaudi parasitaemia and had a higher mortality rate. This important observation deserved to be further investigated among human populations.

10. Chronic Immune Activation Associated with Chronic Helminthic and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infections: Role of Hyporesponsiveness and Anergy
Chronic immune activation is one of the hallmarks of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It is present also, with very similar characteristics, in very large human populations infested with helminthic infections. We have tried to review the studies addressing the changes in the immune profiles and responses of hosts infected with either one of thes

11. The detection of circulating antibody in human toxocara infections using the indirect fluorescent antibody test
The indirect fluorescent antibody test has been used to detect Toxocara antibodies quantitatively in human sera. The results obtained correlate well with those obtained with the toxocara skin test. Cross reactions have been found with Ascaris lumbricoides and about one in five normal sera give a significant fluorescent reaction. The specificity of the test h

12. Clinical and laboratory aspects of filariasis.
Human filarial infections afflict over 150 million persons worldwide and are major causes of morbidity in many developing countries. Onchocerca volvulus infection is a leading preventable cause of blindness, while bancroftian and brugian filariasis may produce lymphatic obstruction of the genitalia and extremities (elephantiasis). Definitive diagnosis of the
