2. Development and characterization of essential fatty acid deficiency in human endothelial cells in culture.
We induced an essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells by culture in medium with 20% (vol/vol) delipidated fetal calf serum. EFAD, reflected by decreased cellular linoleic acid (18:2 omega 6) and arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6) and emergence of the oleic acid derivative 5,8,11-eicosatrienoic acid (20:3 omega 9; Mead's

3. Effects of omega-6/3 and omega-9/6 nutraceuticals on pain and fertility in peritoneal endometriosis in rats
Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the effects of the nutraceuticals omega-6/3 and omega-9/6 on endometriosis-associated infertility and pain. Methods: Controlled experimental study, with each group composed of eight female rats. Fertility groups: sham-operated control (0.9% saline solution); control with endometriosis (0.9% saline); omega-6/3 (1.2 g/kg/day);

4. Biochemical and functional effects of prenatal and postnatal omega 3 fatty acid deficiency on retina and brain in rhesus monkeys.
Docosahexaenoic acid [22:6 omega 3; 22:6-(4,7,10,13,16,19)] is the major polyunsaturated fatty acid in the photoreceptor membranes of the retina and in cerebral gray matter. It must be obtained either from the diet or by synthesis from other omega 3 fatty acids, chiefly alpha-linolenic acid (18:3 omega 3). We tested the effect of dietary omega 3 fatty acid d

5. Ação anti-inflamatória e antioxidante do mix de óleos ômega 9, 6 e 3 de baixa relação ômega-6/ômega-3 e elevada relação ômega-9/ômega-6 após exodontia em ratos
Oil fatty acids omega-3 and omega-9 have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, while the omega-6 has pro-inflammatory action. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects with high nutraceutical ratio of omega-9: omega-6, antioxidant properties, and low ratio omega-6: omega-3, anti-inflammatory prope

8. Antiperoxidative properties of oil mixes of high ratio Omega-9:Omega-6 and low ratio Omega-6:Omega-3 after molar extraction in rats
PURPOSE: To evaluate the antioxidant and antiperoxidative effects of oil mixes of high ratio Omega-9:Omega-6 and low ratio Omega-6:Omega-3 in the third day after tooth extraction in rats. METHODS: Thirty-two male Wistar rats (270-310g) were randomly distributed in two groups: Control (n=24) and Test (n=8). Control group was divided into three subgroups (n=8

9. Characterization of Ca2+ channel currents in cultured rat cerebellar granule neurones.
1. High-threshold voltage-gated calcium channel currents (IBa) were studied in cultured rat cerebellar granule neurones using the whole-cell patch clamp technique with 10 mM Ba2+ as the charge carrier. The putative P-type component of whole-cell current was characterized by utilizing the toxin omega-agatoxin IVA (omega-Aga IVA) in combination with other bloc

11. Dietary omega-3 fatty acid deficiency and visual loss in infant rhesus monkeys.
Linolenic acid (18:3 omega 3) is a dietary precursor of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 omega 3), the major fatty acid in the photoreceptor membranes of the retina. We hypothesized that rhesus monkeys deprived of dietary omega-3 fatty acids during prenatal and postnatal development would show plasma depletion of these fatty acids and visual impairment. 12. Elucidation of the Biosynthesis of Eicosapentaenoic Acid in the Microalga Porphyridium cruentum (II. Studies with Radiolabeled Precursors).
In the course of the study of the biosynthesis of the fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the microalga Porphyridium cruentum, cells were pulse-labeled with various radiolabeled fatty acid precursors. Our data show that the major end products of the biosynthesis are EPA-containing galactolipids of a eukaryotic and prokaryotic nature. The prokaryotic mo
