1. Comparison of Pericardiocentesis in Post-Cardiac Surgery and Nonsurgical Patients with Pericardial Tamponade
Abstract Introduction: There are several approaches for pericardiocentesis. However, there is no definite suggestion about puncture location after cardiac surgery. The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is any difference regarding puncture location during pericardiocentesis in postoperative cardiac tamponade comparing to nonsurgical cardiac t

4. Pericardial Effusion with Cardiac Tamponade as a Form of Presentation of Primary Hypothyroidism
The authors describe a case of pericardial effusion accompanied by cardiac tamponade caused by primary hypothyroidism. Diagnosis was made by exclusion, because other causes of cardiac tamponade are more frequent. Emergency treatment of cardiac tamponade is pericardiocentesis (with possible pericardial window), and, after stabilization, performance of hormona

5. Pericardiocentesis and systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy in the management of cardiac tamponade secondary to disseminated breast carcinoma.
Three patients with cardiac tamponade secondary to disseminated breast carcinoma were treated by pericardiocentesis followed by systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy. This approach controlled pericardial effusion in all the patients and extended their survival.

6. Pericardial effusion in patients with cancer: outcome with contemporary management strategies.
OBJECTIVE--To investigate the clinical presentation and current management strategies of pericardial effusion in patients with malignancy. DESIGN--Retrospective single centre, consecutive observational study. SETTING--University hospital. PATIENTS--93 consecutive patients with a past or present diagnosis of cancer and a pericardial effusion, including 50 wit

8. The evolution of the management of penetrating wounds of the heart.
In contrast to neurological surgery, which has its origins in the treppaned skulls of Neolithic man, the realization of cardiac surgery awaited the successful suture of a wound of the heart, an accomplishment of the nineteenth century. While the problem of pneumothorax has been cited as contributing to the delay in the development of surgery of the chest, ex

9. How do the clinical findings in patients with pericardial effusions influence the success of aspiration?
OBJECTIVE--To identify features associated with success or failure of aspiration of pericardial effusion. METHOD--A retrospective analysis of 36 drainage procedures in 30 patients with pericardial effusion was performed using patient records and echocardiograms. RESULTS--Unsuccessful aspiration was associated with pericardial loculation but not with the seni

10. Massive pericardial effusion in a hypothyroid child.
A child with Down's syndrome and long standing severe hypothyroidism had a massive pericardial effusion without cardiac tamponade. The effusion completely resolved with medical treatment without pericardiocentesis.

11. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis with cardiac tamponade.
A 4-year-old girl with seronegative systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis developed acute cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis and systemic corticosteroids resulted in complete recovery of the pericardial involvement. This was followed by complete remission of rheumatoid disease.

12. A progressive pericardial effusion caused by psittacosis.
A patient developed signs of a progressive pericardial effusion over a period of eight days. Diagnostic and therapeutic pericardiocentesis was performed. Viral titres to psittacosis rose from less than 1:8 to greater than 1:256 indicating recent infection.
