Analisamos a

2. Impairment of the hematological response and interleukin-1β production in protein-energy malnourished mice after endotoxemia with lipopolysaccharide
The objectives of this study were to determine if protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) could affect the hematologic response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the interleukin-1β (IL-1β) production, leukocyte migration, and blood leukocyte expression of CD11a/CD18. Two-month-old male Swiss mice were submitted to PEM (N = 30) with a low-protein diet (14 days) contai

7. The synthesis and processing of a nuclear RNA precursor to rat pregrowth hormone messenger RNA.
A recombinant DNA plasmid, pBR322-GH1, which contains about 80% of the sequences of rat pregrowth hormone (pGH) mRNA, allowed an analysis of nuclear RNA from GH3 cells for possible precursors of cytoplasmic pGH mRNA. A single 20-22S RNA SPECIES ABOUT 2-3 TIMes larger than pGH mRNA was detected in nuclear RNA from GH3 cells labeled for 5 min. with 3H-uridine.

8. Characterization of Poly-γ-Glutamate Hydrolase Encoded by a Bacteriophage Genome: Possible Role in Phage Infection of Bacillus subtilis Encapsulated with Poly-γ-Glutamate
Some Bacillus subtilis strains, including natto (fermented soybeans) starter strains, produce a capsular polypeptide of glutamate with a γ-linkage, called poly-γ-glutamate (γ-PGA). We identified and purified a monomeric 25-kDa degradation enzyme for γ-PGA (designated γ-PGA hydrolase, PghP) from bacteriophage ΦNIT1 in B. subtilis host cells. The monomer

9. Expression of the plasmodial pfmdr1 gene in mammalian cells is associated with increased susceptibility to chloroquine.
Chloroquine (CQ)-resistant (CQR) Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites show a strong decrease in CQ accumulation in comparison with chloroquine-sensitive parasites. Controversy exists over the role of the plasmodial pfmdr1 gene in the CQR phenotype. pfmdr1 is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette transporters. Other members of this family are

10. Restriction of plasmid DNA during transformation but not conjugation in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains WR302 and PGH3-2 were characterized with respect to their restriction-modification phenotype. WR302 DNA was cleaved by HaeIII, indicating the lack of methylation at the GGCC sequence. PGH3-2 produced NgoSI (an isoschizomer of NgoII). WR302 produced a restriction enzyme with a recognition sequence different from that of NgoI, Ngo

11. Responses of baboon cerebral and extracerebral arteries to prostacyclin and prostaglandin endoperoxide in vitro and in vivo.
The responses of baboon cerebral and extracerebral arteries to prostaglandin endoperoxide (PGH2) and prostacyclin (PGI2) were investigated on isolated arteries and in vivo by serial angiography. Both PGH2 and PGI2 could produce dose-dependent contraction or relaxation of isolated arteries. PGH2 induced relaxation was indicative of prostacyclin synthetase act

12. Effects of Prostaglandin Cyclic Endoperoxides on the Lung Circulation of Unanesthetized Sheep
Although prostaglandins E2 and F2α have been suggested as mediators of the pulmonary hypertension seen after endotoxin infusion or during alveolar hypoxia, their precursors, the endoperoxides (prostaglandins G2 and H2) are much more potent vasoconstrictors in vitro. In this study we compared the effects of prostaglandin (PG)H2, a stable 9-methylene ether an
