1. Construction of killer industrial yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae HAU-1 and its fermentation performance
Saccharomyces cerevisiae HAU-1, a time tested industrial yeast possesses most of the desirable fermentation characteristics like fast growth and fermentation rate, osmotolerance, high ethanol tolerance, ability to ferment molasses, and to ferment at elevated temperatures etc. However, this yeast was found to be sensitive against the killer strains of Sacchar

2. Isolation and fusion of protoplasts from the phytopathogenic fungus Sclerotium rolfsii (Sacc.)
Sclerotium rolfsii (Sacc.) is a serious plant pathogenic fungus and lacks perfect (basidial) stage in production. Protoplast fusion technology was employed to reconstruct fusants from this fungus. Two strains designated as A and R were used. Maximum protoplast yields of 3.8x10(5) /g mycelia and 2.8x10(5) /g mycelia were formed in strains A and R respectively

3. Fusão de protoplastos visando a reconstrução da laranja azeda / Protoplast fusion aiming the reconstruction of sour orange
The aim of this work was to apply the technique of chemical fusion of protoplasts, in order to develop interspecific somatic hybrids between mandarins (Citrus reticulata) and pummelos (Citrus grandis), in order to produce similar to sour orange (Citrus aurantium). The sources for protoplasts were embryogenic suspension cultures of Pagetangelo (C. reticulata

4. Citrus protoplast fusion and evaluation of the somatic hybrid Hamlin sweet orange + Montenegrina mandarin for resistance to Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri and Xylella fastidiosa / Fusão de protoplastos de citros e avaliação da resistência do híbrido somático laranja Hamlin + mexerica Montenegrina a Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri e Xylella fastidiosa
Buscou-se produzir híbridos somáticos entre laranjas doces (Citrus sinensis) com tangerinas, mexericas (C. reticulata, C. reshni, C. sunki, C. deliciosa), tangores (C reticulata x C. sinensis) ou tangelo Orlando (C. reticulata x C. paradisi), além da avaliação da resistência do híbrido somático laranja Hamlin (C. sinensis) + mexerica Monten

5. Seleção de linhagens de Saccharomyces cerevisiae potencializadas pelo fator Killer, H2S- e o carater floculante. / Improvement of a saccharomyces cerevisiae strain by the characters: "Killer" skills, flocculation capacity and lack in productinof H2S-.
Flocculative and "killer" skills and lack in production of H2S are desirable characteristics of the ethanolic fermentative yeasts. Seven selected strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae with some of these characteristics were evaluated for confirmation of these habilities and their genetic characterization was undertaken by eletrophoretic kariotyping. The strain

6. Hibridação somática entre Citrus sinensis e C. grandis. / Somatic hybridization of Citrus sinensis and C. grandis.

7. Caracterização citogenetica de algumas especies e hibridos interespecificos de Passiflora
ln passion ffuit breeding programs interspecific hybridization has been the best altemative in searching for diseases resistance in the Passiflora edulis f flavicarpa, the most cultivated commercial species. Studies were carried out on chromosomic characterization and meiotic behavior. The present work aimed to contribute with basic cytogenetic informations

8. Melhoramento de Bacillus amyloliquefaciens por transformação e fusão, para produção de a-amilase e proteinas
Two different strains of Bacillus3 were used B. amyloliquefaciens ATCC 2342 and B. natto, isolated from the commercial product "Natto", good producer of α -amylase and of proteases, respectively. The level of production of these enzymes was increased through technique using transformant DNA and fusion of protoplasts. The genetic improvement by transform

9. Cytoplasmic transfer of oligomycin resistance during protoplast fusion of Saccharomycopsis lipolytica.
Mitotic segregation of oligomycin resistance and oligomycin sensitivity was observed among the prototrophic progeny of protoplast fusion between drug-resistant and drug-sensitive complementary auxotrophs of Saccharomycopsis lipolytica. The transfer of oligomycin resistance by protoplast fusion without karyogamy suggests a cytoplasmic inheritance of this drug

10. Genetic recombination in Actinoplanes brasiliensis by protoplast fusion.
Protoplast formation, fusion, and cell regeneration have been achieved with mutant strains of Actinoplanes brasiliensis. Three-, four-, and five-factor crosses have shown genetic recombination among the markers, and a five-factor cross is analyzed and discussed. Possibilities of using protoplast fusion for gene mapping and strain improvement are suggested.

11. Protoplast fusion of Lactobacillus fermentum.
Tetracycline-resistant (Tetr) erythromycin-resistant (Eryr) fusants of Lactobacillus fermentum 604 carrying a 10-megadalton Tetr plasmid and L. fermentum 605 carrying a 38-megadalton Eryr plasmid were obtained by means of polyethylene glycol-induced protoplast fusion.

12. Enhancement of Lignin Degradation in Streptomyces spp. by Protoplast Fusion †
Protoplast fusion was investigated as a technique for genetically manipulating two lignin-degrading Streptomyces strains, Streptomyces viridosporus T7A and Streptomyces setonii 75Vi2. Four of 19 recombinants tested showed enhanced production of acid-precipitable polymeric lignin (APPL), producing 155 to 264% more APPL from corn stover lignocellulose than was
