1. Secondary bacterial infections in patients with coronavirus disease 2019-associated pneumonia
SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The vast majority of patients who hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 are given empirical antibiotic therapy. However, information on the frequency, microorganism species, and resistance rates of secondary bacterial infections in coronavirus disease 2019 patients are insufficient. We aimed to show the frequency of secondary infecti

2. Development of technology for bakery products
Abstract The purpose of this study is to create an assortment of whole grain wheat bread that is resistant to microorganisms and has high nutritional value. The research was carried out on the microbiological purity of whole wheat flour, the inhibitory effect of plant extracts on thermophilic bacteria detected in flour and the amount of biologically active a

3. Antimicrobial use for treatment of healthcare-associated infections and bacterial resistance in a reference neonatal unit
Abstract Objective The use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials, such as third and fourth-generation, are responsible for emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms in neonatal units. Furthermore, antimicrobial daily doses are not standardized in neonatology. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of antimicrobial broad spectrum to

4. Pseudomonas SP. in uninspected raw goat’s milk in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Abstract Although quite controversial from the point of view of food safety, a considerable number of people across different age and socioeconomic groups consume raw goat’s milk. Even if refrigerated after milking, raw goat's milk may still be susceptible to the lipolytic and proteolytic actions of psychrotrophic microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas. In th

5. Evaluation of in vitro activity of ceftolozane-tazobactam against recent clinical bacterial isolates from Brazil - the EM200 study
ABSTRACT Background: The emergence of antibiotic resistance is increasing and there are few effective antibiotics to treat infections caused by resistant and multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro activity of ceftolozane-tazobactam against clinical bacterial isolates from Brazil. Methods: A total of 673 Gram-nega

7. Antimicrobial activity of propolis extract fractions against Staphylococcus spp. isolated from goat mastitis

8. Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the ICU: prevalence, resistance profile, and antimicrobial consumption
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the main pathogens causing infection in intensive care units (ICUs) and usually presents antimicrobial resistance. METHODS: Data were obtained from ICUs between 2010 and 2013. RESULTS: P. aeruginosa had a prevalence of 14.5% of which 48.7% were multidrug resistant. We observed increasing resistance t

9. Antimicrobial susceptibility and minimal inhibitory concentration of bacteria isolated from the eyes of dogs with keratoconjunctivitis sicca

10. Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of two extract of propolis against isolates of Staphylococcus spp. and multiresistant bacterials

The increasing number of antibiotic resistant microorganisms requires the development of new drugs. In this context, natural cadiolides are promising leads as they present potent antimicrobial activity and low cytotoxicity. In this work we report the synthesis of 21 new cadiolide analogues. The synthesis involved a Diels−Alder cycloaddition/ cycloreversion

12. Detection of Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli in Bovine Meat in the Northern Region of Paraná State, Brazil
Abstract Ground bovine meat is commonly consumed by the population of Brazil. However, it constitutes an excellent medium for the multiplication of microorganisms due to available nutrients and handling practices prior to consumption. Here, we examined 100 samples of ground beef for the presence of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) pathotypes by PCR, and
