2. Lateral asymmetry of voluntary attention orienting
We recently demonstrated that automatic attention favors the right side of space and, in the present study, we investigated whether voluntary attention also favors this side. Six reaction time experiments were conducted. In each experiment, 12 new 18-25-year-old male right-handed individuals were tested. In Experiments 1, 2, 3 (a, b) and 4 (a, b), tasks with

3. A profissionalização do contador de histórias contemporâneo
Information has a main role in contemporary life and is the base for decision-making in several social spheres. At the same time, excess of both information and technological and visual stimulus makes the individual feel incapable of following changes and transformations in life and society; changes that occur in a vertiginous way. People feel the need to br

4. The role of vertical disparities in the oblique effect
A great deal of studies using different visual tasks (e.g., Vernier acuity tasks, tilt illusion, crowding, etc) have revealed that our perception is strongly influenced by the orientation of the stimulus. Most studies have investigated visual acuity in two-dimensional visual spaces (2D) but little is known about the effect of line orientation in depth percep

5. Evidence for divided automatic attention
A long-standing debate in the literature is whether attention can form two or more independent spatial foci in addition to the well-known unique spatial focus. There is evidence that voluntary visual attention divides in space. The possibility that this also occurs for automatic visual attention was investigated here. Thirty-six female volunteers were tested

6. Visual Modulation of Auditory Responses in the Owl Inferior Colliculus
The barn owl's central auditory system creates a map of auditory space in the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICX). Although the crucial role visual experience plays in the formation and maintenance of this auditory space map is well established, the mechanism by which vision influences ICX responses remains unclear. Surprisingly, previous exper

7. Visual hemispatial inattention: stimulus parameters and exploratory strategies.
Patients with unilateral hemispheric lesions were given visual target cancellation tasks. As expected, marked contralateral and less severe ipsilateral visual inattention were observed in patients with right-sided cerebral lesions whereas those with left-sided lesions showed only mild contralateral neglect. Stimulus material (shapes vs letters) and array (ra

8. Optical images of visible and invisible percepts in the primary visual cortex of primates
We optically imaged a visual masking illusion in primary visual cortex (area V-1) of rhesus monkeys to ask whether activity in the early visual system more closely reflects the physical stimulus or the generated percept. Visual illusions can be a powerful way to address this question because they have the benefit of dissociating the stimulus from perception.

9. Cells responsive to free-field auditory stimuli in guinea-pig superior colliculus: distribution and response properties.
We have investigated the responses of superior colliculus neurones in the anaesthetized guinea-pig to free-field auditory stimulation. The auditory cells were located throughout the deeper laminae and also in the lower part of the stratum opticum. Auditory cells were not found in the rostral pole of the superior colliculus. The auditory responses consisted o

10. Hemispace-visual field interactions in visual extinction.
Visual extinction was studied in a patient with neglect from a right hemispheric lesion. Extinction occurred during double simultaneous stimulation within the same visual hemi-field (VHF). This finding suggests that interhemispheric rivalry is not a critical factor. During double simultaneous stimulation within the same VHF as well as with stimuli in differe

11. Evidence for dissociation between the perceptual and visuomotor systems in humans.
When a visual stimulus is continuously moved behind a small stationary window, the window appears displaced in the direction of motion of the stimulus. In this study we showed that the magnitude of this illusion is dependent on (i) whether a perceptual or visuomotor task is used for judging the location of the window (ii) the directional signature of the sti

12. Two motion perception mechanisms revealed through distance-driven reversal of apparent motion
We demonstrate two kinds of visual stimuli that exhibit motion in one direction when viewed from near and in the opposite direction from afar. These striking reversals occur because each kind of stimulus is constructed to simultaneously activate two different mechanisms: a short-range mechanism that computes motion from space-time correspondences in stimulus
