1. Uma ideia de cartografia / An idea of cartography
The works of Deleuze and Guattari bring strategies for facing hard ways of feeling, thinking and conceiving. Vague universals are abandoned for the sake of a practical phylosophy. From the standpoint of this phylosophy, this dissertation seeks to make available one idea of cartography that, opposed to the posing of questions about the ideia in the form of "W

2. Synchronization in intermittent turbulence and spatiotemporal chaos in the solar-terrestrial environment / Sincronização em turbulência intermitente e caos espaço-temporal no ambiente solar-terrestre
In this work we analyze synchronization due to multiscale interactions in observations of intermittent turbulence and numerical simulations of spatiotemporal intermittency in neutral fluids and space plasmas. This study is carried out in two parts. First, we apply two distinct nonlinear techniques, kurtosis and phase coherence index, to measure the degree of

4. Simulation, analysis and computational characterization of fingering patterns in fluids displacement on porous media. / Simulação, análise e caracterização computacional de padrões de fingering em deslocamentos de fluidos em meios porosos
In this work, the patterns related to the displacement process of an interface between two ftuids of different mobilities are studied computationally. In the literature, the formation process of these patterns is known as fingering, a type of dynamic instability in the interface between two miscible fluids, where the fingers are classified in two types: dens

5. Darwinian and Pavlovian Evolutionary Prisoner Dilemma in the One-Dimensional Cellular Automata: a new representation and exhaustive exploration of parameter space / Dilema do prisioneiro evolucionário Darwiniano e Pavloviano no autômato celular unidimensional: uma nova representação e exploração exaustiva do espaço de parâmetros
Portanto, a estrutur

6. Analysis of attracting and non-attracting chaotic sets in low and high-dimensional dynamical systems: application to the dynamics of plasma waves in the sun-earth connection / Análise de conjuntos caóticos atrativos e não atrativos em sistemas dinâmicos de baixa e alta dimensão: aplicação para a dinâmica de ondas de plasma na conexão sol - terra
In this work we present a numerical study on the interaction between chaotic attractors and nonattracting chaotic sets in mathematical models that describe the nonlinear dynamics of plasma waves in the Sun-Earth connection. The work is divided in two parts. In the first part we analyze a low-dimensional dynamical system describing stationary Alfv´en waves m

7. Dinamica não linear e interações de defeitos topologicos e solitons na presença de forças externas e impurezas
We study the catastrophes that can occur in kink dynamics in the presence of external forces and impurities. Under the action of some anharmonic forces it can occurs that not only the translational mode is unstable but also the internal modes ( shape modes) or even part of the continuum spectrum ( the soliton is unstable against the interaction with phonons!

8. Ecological chaos in the wake of invasion.
Irregularities in observed population densities have traditionally been attributed to discretization of the underlying dynamics. We propose an alternative explanation by demonstrating the evolution of spatiotemporal chaos in reaction-diffusion models for predator-prey interactions. The chaos is generated naturally in the wake of invasive waves of predators.

9. Order and disorder in fluid motion.
The development of complex states of fluid motion is illustrated by reviewing a series of experiments, emphasizing film flows, surface waves, and thermal convection. In one dimension, cellular patterns bifurcate to states of spatiotemporal chaos. In two dimensions, even ordered patterns can be surprisingly intricate when quasiperiodic patterns are included.

10. Computation with chaos: a paradigm for cortical activity.
A device comprising two interconnected networks of oscillators exhibiting spatiotemporal chaos is considered. An external cue stabilizes input specific unstable periodic orbits of the first network, thus creating an "attentive" state. Only in this state is the device able to perform pattern discrimination and motion detection. We discuss the relevance of the

11. Quasiperiodicity and chaos in cardiac fibrillation.
In cardiac fibrillation, disorganized waves of electrical activity meander through the heart, and coherent contractile function is lost. We studied fibrillation in three stationary forms: in human chronic atrial fibrillation, in a stabilized form of canine ventricular fibrillation, and in fibrillation-like activity in thin sheets of canine and human ventricu

12. Spatiotemporal complexity of ventricular fibrillation revealed by tissue mass reduction in isolated swine right ventricle. Further evidence for the quasiperiodic route to chaos hypothesis.
We have presented evidence that ventricular fibrillation is deterministic chaos arising from quasiperiodicity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the transition from chaos (ventricular fibrillation, VF) to periodicity (ventricular tachycardia) through quasiperiodicity could be produced by the progressive reduction of tissue mass. In isolated
