1. Coagulase-negative staphylococci: a 20-year study on the antimicrobial resistance profile of blood culture isolates from a teaching hospital
ABSTRACT The increasing rates of nosocomial infection associated with coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were the rationale for this study, aiming to categorize oxacillin-resistant CoNS species recovered from blood culture specimens of inpatients at the UNESP Hospital das Clínicas in Botucatu, Brazil, over a 20-year period, and determine their sensitiv

2. Effectiveness of preoperative decolonization with nasal povidone iodine in Chinese patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgery: a prospective cross-sectional study
Staphylococcus aureus colonization in the nares of patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgery increases the potential risk of surgical site infections. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has gained recognition as a pathogen that is no longer only just a hospital-acquired pathogen. Patients positive for MRSA are associated with higher rates of morbid

3. Primary pyomyositis and disseminated septic pulmonary emboli: a reactivated staphylococcal infection?
Staphylococcal pyomyositis is a severe invasive soft tissue infection with high mortality rate that is increasingly being recognized even in temperate climates. In most cases predisposing factors are identified that include either source of skin penetration or/and impaired host immunocompetence. A case of primary, community-acquired pyomyositis of the left i

4. Prevalence, aetiology and antibiotic resistance profiles of coagulase negative staphylococci isolated in a teaching hospital
In this paper we carried out a study about prevalence of the clinically significant coagulase negative staphylococcal (CNS) isolates found in an university hospital. Two hundred four CNS isolates from 191 patients obtained between the period of 1998 to 2002, were studied. About 27% (52/191) of the infection cases studied were confirmed as CNS-associated dise

5. High vancomycin resistance among biofilms produced by Staphylococcus species isolated from central venous catheters
Biofilm production is an important mechanism that allows microbes to escape host defences and antimicrobial therapy. Vancomycin has been used largely for the treatment of methicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections. Here, we determined the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) for 82 Staphylococcus sp

6. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA): molecular background, virulence, and relevance for public health
Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) are frequently found in nosocomial environments as the main pathogen in several infections. In 1961, reports of nosocomial S. aureus resistant to methicillin, the drug of choice against penicillin-resistant strains, required new alternatives and vancomycin started being used to treat infectio

8. Methicillin/Oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a hospital and public health threat in Brazil
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is an established nosocomial pathogen (HA-MRSA, hospital acquired MRSA), but has recently begun to appear in the community (CA-MRSA, community acquired MRSA). The cause of resistance to methicillin and all other β-lactam antibiotics is the mecA gene, which is situated on a mobile genetic element, the Staphylococca

Composição química e atividade antimicrobiana e de extratos à base de alho (Allium sativum e Allium tuberosum) sobre a infecção estafilocócica : estudo in vitro e in vivo, em ratos / Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of extracts of garlic (Allium sativum and Allium tuberosum) on staphylococcal infection : study in vitro and in vivo in rats

10. Two outbreaks of mixed etiology associated with central venous catheters inserted by phlebotomy in critical neonates
Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci are the main cause of sepsis in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Central venous catheters (CVCs) are an important part of critical neonates' treatment and are associated with sepsis. The aim of this study was to investigate two outbreaks caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermi

11. Estudo de amostras de Staphylococcus spp isolados de infecÃÃo nosocomial da cidade de Recife, Pernambuco, Brasil / Study of samples of Staphylococcus spp isolated from nosocomial infection in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil
Staphylococcus, although present in the microflora of human skin and mucosa, behaves as an opportunistic pathogen responsible for infectious complications, especially after the implantation of prosthetic devices. Furthermore, it has an extraordinary ability to acquire resistance to antimicrobials. Nowadays, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRS) are wide

12. First reported case of infective endocarditis caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus not associated with healthcare contact in Brazil
We report here the first case of endocarditis due to CA-MRSA not associated with healthcare contact in Brazil in Brazil. A previously healthy patient presented with history of endocarditis following a traumatic wound infection. Patient had multiple positive blood cultures within 72 h of admission and met modified Duke's criterion for infective endocarditis.
