3. Failure of 1-β-d-Ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-Triazole-3-Carboxamide (Virazole, ICN 1229) to Stimulate Interferon
In cultured cells, Virazole failed to stimulate either interferon or a cellular resistance which continued in its absence. Serum from Virazole-treated mice likewise contained no demonstrable interferon.

4. In Vitro Effect of Virazole Against Influenza Viruses
The minimal inhibitory concentrations of Virazole against 32 mean tissue culture infective doses of three type A influenza strains including type A/England/42/72 (H3N2) and a type B strain in tissue culture were 0.1 and 0.05 μg/ml, respectively. The growth inhibition pattern by various Virazole concentrations of type A virus was similar to that of the type

5. Effect of 1-β-d-Ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-Triazole-3-Carboxamide (Virazole, ICN 1229) on Herpes and Vaccinia Keratitis and Encephalitis in Laboratory Animals
Topical application of 1-β-d-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide (Virazole) significantly inhibited the development of herpetic keratitis in the eyes of rabbits, as determined by both infectivity and Draize scoring parameters. Significant inhibition of the infection was demonstrated with 10% concentrations of Virazole; a 1% solution had a moderate ef

6. In Vitro Effect of 1-β-d-Ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-Triazole-3-Carboxamide (Virazole, ICN 1229) on Deoxyribonucleic Acid and Ribonucleic Acid Viruses
Virazole (1-β-d-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide) is a highly soluble new synthetic nucleoside having significant, reproducible activity against a broad spectrum of deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid viruses in vitro. The drug inhibited viral cytopathogenic effects in monolayers of cells infected for 3 days with type 3 adeno, types 1 and 2

7. Mechanism of Action of 1-β-D-Ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-Triazole-3-Carboxamide (Virazole), A New Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Agent
The antiviral activity of the synthetic nucleoside, Virazole (1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide), against measles virus in Vero cell cultures was substantially reversed by xanthosine, guanosine, and to a slightly lesser extent by inosine. Virazole 5′-phosphate was subsequently found to be a potent competitive inhibitor of inosine 5′-phosp

8. Antiviral Effects of Virazole in Chronic Hepatitis B Surface Antigen-Seropositive Chimpanzees
Virazole (Ribavirin, ICN 1229), a broad-spectrum, antiviral chemotherapeutic agent was used to treat two adult chronically hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag)-seropositive chimpanzees. No significant change in serum hepatitis B surface antigen was noted and no adverse reactions were observed. The role of viral replication in the chronic carrier state of hep

10. Suppression by 1-β-d-Ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-Triazole-3-Carboxamide (Virazole, ICN 1229) of Influenza Virus-Induced Infections in Mice
1-β-d-Ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide (Virazole) was found to possess significant antiviral activity against aerosol-induced or intranasally induced influenza A0, A2, and B virus infections in mice. Significant protection was achieved by both oral and intraperitoneal routes of administration. Depending upon the level of virus infection, antiviral

11. Inhibition of Influenza Virus Ribonucleic Acid Polymerase by Ribavirin Triphosphate
Ribavirin 5′-triphosphate (RTP), derived from the broad-spectrum antiviral compound ribavirin (Virazole), can selectively inhibit influenza virus ribonucleic acid polymerase in a cell-free assay. Ribavirin and its 5′-monophosphate have no effect on the polymerase. The inhibition is competitive with respect to adenosine 5′-triphosphate and guanosine 5

12. Variables Influencing the In Vitro Susceptibilities of Herpes Simplex Viruses to Antiviral Drugs
Some of the variables in a microtiter tissue culture method for estimating antiviral susceptibility of herpes simplex viruses (HSV) were studied. Six antiviral drugs (5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine, cytosine arabinoside, 9-β-arabinofuranosyladenine, isoprinosine, virazole, and 2-deoxy-d-glucose) and three tissue culture cell lines (primary rabbit kidney, WI-38, a
